Alpine Wildflower Meadows — Bernese Oberland
The high alpine meadows above Grindelwald and Mürren explode with gentians, edelweiss and dozens of wildflower species against a backdrop of glaciated peaks.
About this spectacle
In July and August, the high alpine meadows above Grindelwald and Mürren transform into vast tapestries of colour. Deep-blue gentians push through short-cropped grass alongside the silver-furred rosettes of edelweiss, while alpine roses, yellow arnica, and purple campanulas fill the air with a faint herbal sweetness. The backdrop is extraordinary: the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau rise behind curtains of glacial melt, their white flanks framing the floral foreground in every direction. Morning light rakes across the meadows at low angles, deepening colours and casting long shadows across the undulating terrain. Cowbells ring distantly, and the only other sounds are birdsong and wind. Visitors walk through flowers at knee height, bees working beside the path, with panoramic views of glaciated ridges that feel both intimate and immense. This is a quintessential alpine sensory experience — cool air, vivid colour, and silence punctuated only by the natural world.
