Almond Blossom — Serra de Tramuntana Mallorca Spain

The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range of northwest Mallorca transforms each January and February when the island's 4 million almond trees come into bloom — the earliest flowering tree in the European calendar, turning the mountain slopes, valley floors, and terrace walls of the Tramuntana's agricultural landscape into a wash of white and pale pink flowers against the grey-green olive trees and ochre stone walls. The bloom predates Mallorca's mass tourism season by 3 months, making January and February the island's quietest and most botanically extraordinary period, and the combination of the snow-possible Serra de Tramuntana peaks, the flowering almond orchards of the inland valleys around Selva and Inca, and the Mallorcan winter light creates one of the western Mediterranean's most serene and beautiful seasonal landscapes. The traditional Almond Blossom Festival in February at Lloret de Vistalegre has celebrated the bloom since 1964.

About this spectacle

Each January and February, northwest Mallorca undergoes one of the Mediterranean's quietest and most visually striking seasonal transformations. The Serra de Tramuntana's terraced slopes, valley floors, and dry-stone walled orchards fill with the bloom of some four million almond trees, their white and pale pink flowers appearing weeks before any other flowering tree in Europe. Morning light catches the blossoms against the silver-grey of ancient olive trees and the warm ochre of traditional stone walls, creating a layered palette unique to the Mallorcan interior. Villages like Selva and the valleys around Inca sit at the heart of the bloom, while the jagged, occasionally snow-dusted peaks of the Tramuntana ridge form a dramatic backdrop. The island's mass-tourism infrastructure is dormant, meaning roads are open, hillside tracks are quiet, and the air carries the faint sweetness of the flowers without the bustle of summer. In February, the historic Almond Blossom Festival at Lloret de Vistalegre — held since 1964 — offers a cultural counterpoint to the landscape itself.
