Allgäu Hochvogel — Alpine Ibex
Reintroduced alpine ibex on rocky ridges near Hochvogel.
About this spectacle
On the rocky ridges flanking the Hochvogel massif in the Allgäu Alps, visitors can observe reintroduced alpine ibex navigating steep limestone terrain with extraordinary sure-footedness. These stocky, large-horned wild goats are most visible in morning light as they graze on alpine grasses and move across exposed cliff faces, seemingly unconcerned by vertiginous drops. The rugged scenery of the Allgäu Alps provides a dramatic backdrop — jagged peaks, scattered snowfields, and sweeping valley views. Ibex are social animals, and small bachelor groups or family herds may be spotted resting on sun-warmed rocks. Binoculars or a telephoto lens are essential, as the animals often occupy terrain inaccessible to humans. The experience combines mountain hiking with genuine wildlife watching in a setting that feels far wilder than the proximity to southern Germany suggests.
