African Penguin Breeding Colony (Dyer Island) — St. Croix Island
One of the world's largest African penguin colonies, visible by boat off Port Elizabeth — thousands of endangered birds braying, breeding, and raising chicks on rocky shores.
About this spectacle
St. Croix Island, off Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, hosts one of the largest African penguin breeding colonies in the world. Visitors approach by boat, hearing the distinctive braying calls before landfall comes into view. On the island's rocky shores and sandy burrows, thousands of black-and-white penguins waddle, squabble over nesting sites, and feed their downy chicks. The air carries a sharp salt-and-guano tang while gulls wheel overhead. During breeding season, fluffy grey juveniles crowd the colony edges, testing their courage near the water. Boats typically circle close enough for excellent views without landing, making this a genuinely intimate encounter with a globally threatened species. The colony's sheer density — birds packed across every available surface — creates a cacophony of sound and motion that is unlike almost any other wildlife experience on the South African coast.
