African Penguin Breeding Colony (Dyer Island) — Dyer Island
An endangered African penguin breeding colony on a remote island near Gansbaai, best reached by boat through the waters of the famous Shark Alley.
About this spectacle
Dyer Island, a small rocky outcrop off the Western Cape coast near Gansbaai, hosts one of South Africa's significant African penguin breeding colonies. Visitors arrive by boat to witness these endangered birds waddling between nesting burrows, calling in their distinctive braying tones, and swimming in the cold Benguela Current waters. The island's close proximity to Gansbaai also places it within the famed Shark Alley, so boat trips often pass through waters patrolled by great white sharks. The colony is active year-round, but breeding season brings dense crowds of penguins attending eggs and fluffy chicks. The air carries the sharp scent of guano, and the constant cacophony of braying calls fills the sea air. Nearby Geyser Rock hosts a large Cape fur seal colony, adding to the wildlife spectacle visible on a single boat excursion.
